That line goes back to a 1903 play by George Bernard Shaw: “He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches.” People have used it ever since to say teachers are just the ones who couldn’t make it. I get why it sticks. Nobody wants to pay for advice from someone who isn’t doing the work IRL. But I’m still tattooing, and I co-run three studios. I’m still heavily involved in manufacturing. I live and breathe tattoo culture, and I’ve always tried to leave it better than when I came into it. So what I teach comes from what’s working for me right now, not only from my past 23 years.
