When you want to change what you tattoo, saying no seems like the first step
When you want to change what you tattoo, saying no seems like the first step. But a no without a pitch just leaves an empty spot on your books.
Pitching is how you steer. Somebody comes in with an idea. You show them a version that still gets them what they came for, but leans closer to the work you want to be known for.
Some clients will go for the pitch and some won't. Either way, the piece still counts. Some will be the work you want to be known for. Some will get you closer, and some will just be worth the money.
That's how I built my specialty. I only did free work when the piece was worthy of my portfolio and lined up with what I wanted to be known for.
The rest of the time, I took the ones that got me closer and the ones worth the money, and I got paid while I built.
Once your bills are covered and your books stay full, that's when it makes sense to start passing on the rest.
Learn to pitch first. Then you'll know which ones to turn down.
